Valhøj School accommodates children from ages 6 to 16 and has a sports profile. The existing campus is laid out on a generous site in the outskirts of Copenhagen. Due to a huge growth in student numbers in the coming years, the school requires extension through the addition of two new buildings and a re-think of the organization. "In connection with the project, the architect made us aware of the possibility of using a product on the facade that had extra shrinkage cracks and extra knots, which for many years in Denmark had been sorted out, chipped, and burned. At a time when the world really needs trees to absorb CO2, this seemed highly relevant. Moreover, as craftsmen, it has bothered us that the industry sometimes demands wood but expects it to behave, both in appearance and functionality, like plastic. Wood is beautiful. Wood is a natural material. The shrinkage cracks and knots in the wood contribute to its beautiful expression. In dialogue with a:gain, we had ongoing positive discussions about delivery, sorting outcomes for the wood, and had a very smooth installation process. We are extremely proud and happy with the final result. The fact that, in this one medium-sized project and single phase alone, we have saved 3.3 tons of wood from being burned makes our craftsmen proud. That’s green transition you can truly understand."
